We SHOULD have just gone to see Friday the 13th

There was this one time we were visiting friends and we walked into the living room to find my 9 yo, her 10 and 11 yo’s sitting completely captivated by “Resident Evil”…the scene where zombie Doberman’s attack?…yeah, that one.

After a long talk about how we were never going to tell daddy about this particular incident (HEH), we had a long talk about how to understand when a movie isn’t appropriate.

General rules were:

1. If they use words that cause mommy’s head to implode

2. If anyone’s internal organs are yanked through their nostrils

3. If anyone…ANYONE…is nekkid.

It’s simple.  It isn’t even really all THAT strict.

And then?

I took them to see a movie that had THIS in it.

*I’ll be waiting here while you watch it several times to make sure you actually saw what you think you saw. By the way? You DID*

This is a movie for kids…and while I KNOW that Tim Burton isn’t anyones idea of Dr. Seuss, I sort of figured it was more “James and the Giant Peach” than a 3-D flick with a character jumping up and down in a thong and pasties.

MY mistake.

Just FYI, if you go up to the customer service desk with death in your eyes, the poor guy will actually fumble around so much trying to give you a speedy refund that he will drop most of his drawer on the floor.

**I was NOT illegally videoing the entire movie, just in case you were wondering…you missed the WORST part of the boob scene because I was fumbling to get the camera out of my purse**

**PS…Just got corrected that this flick is NOT a Burton flick…same director as “James and the Giant Peach” and “Nightmare Before Christmas”…but not Burton…don’t want to get sued or anything. HEH*

    This film is not Tim Burton… it’s based on a story by Neil Gaiman. Though director Henry Selick did this film and The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach.

    @Dave2,

    Thanks for letting me know it’s not Tim Burton, I love him and was going to have to be really unhappy with him for a long time. He would just take that so personally, you know.

    My kids and I really want to go see “9” and I know that IS Burton and I was concerned it wouldn’t be appropriate!

    I was thinking about taking my daughter to see this movie and then I saw your update about how you walked out. I also heard that the movie is actually quite scary for younger kids so I think we are going to take a pass on it.

    We had friends go and see it this weekend while we watched their son. They came back and told us definitely NOT a children’s movie. She used the word “creepy” many times in describing it. I can’t wait to see it myself-leaving Rowan with them.

    We took our 4, 7 and 9 year olds to see Coraline in 3D yesterday. It actually wasn’t as scary as I thought it might be. Creepy is a good way to describe it. My husband and I were more than a bit surprised by the pasties ourselves! I don’t think the kids realized that it wasn’t a bikini though. That poor woman’s back must’ve been aching, huh?

    In terms of 9, we saw the preview for that and you should note that Burton is the producer but NOT the director, so you might want to wait until someone else pre-screens it for you.

    Dude. That is just pathetic.

    I sooo would have had the look of death. (And made him give me chocolate to help my kids forget.)

    Um yeah. That won’t be a movie I take my kids to so they could throw popcorn at eachother, scream, kick the seats in front of them, and then finally look up at the screen and see gigantic boobs.

    I’ll save my money.

    Ugh… thank heavens Andrew has not even mentioned this movie (not that he would get to see it).
    Honestly, I think the fat suits with the skinny minnies underneath bothered me as much as the pasties!
    I just checked http://www.pluggedinonline.com – they have THREE paragraphs under sexual content for a PG movie!!!

    OMG – I don’t even HAVE kids, and I’m offended (of course, I’m part penguin {nun}) — but that is just WRONG on so many levels.

    I got the impression from the commercials it was a fantasy/escape/kids cartoon from the preview commercials on television — but OBVIOUSLY, they couldn’t show clips like THAT on commercial television. UGH.

    @Jen W,

    Neither of the girls was particularly scared (although Rachael was “creeped out” by certain parts). I just couldn’t handle the nekkid.

    @Cathy,

    I’m even pretty liberal about what I let my kids watch as far as “real vs fantasy”. I let them watch Lord of the Rings, Series of Unfortunate Events, Nightmare Before Christmas…but I guess I draw the line at huge bouncy boobs in pasties…good to know I have limits, right?

    Those boobs are kinda SCARY! 😉

    Juliette has been talking non-stop about this movie, and i am glad you posted about it. I wasn’t sure, and was really leaning towards a No with the preview where it looks like bugs fall on her head from the shower. I would have never, ever gotten Juliette to take a shower again.

    But … I just could NOT imagine the conversation Juliette and I would have after that. It’s bad enough that at four she’s asked “Is it ok when girls kiss other girls?” I don’t need to have the speechless look on my face.
